Robin Magnus

SHE LAY in bed incapable of closing her eyes, tucked beneath what were Elizabeth’s old sheets in a bedroom Robin had grown accustomed to calling her own while nothing in there actually reminded her of herself.

The Chevaliers had been kind enough to give her lodgings—again—upon her return from Arcadia. Reconstruction would take a while; civilians hadn’t yet been allowed to regain the city. Soldiers like Robin had been encouraged to participate in the rebuilding efforts alongside engineers and trade workers. She’d been there as a volunteer for nearly a month, until the capitol mandated her return on account of Elizabeth’s trial. She’d arrived there on that same day and hadn’t seen anyone—not even Morgan—until they were all in that courtroom.

Up until the moment Robin had been in those stands, she had no idea why her friend had been made to endure such treatment. It was only once that footage lit the room that Robin truly understood what Elizabeth was, what she represented.

Elizabeth was something no one in the Domed city had seen before. She was an anomaly, a problem—danger. If she was associated with Darkness, then it meant daemons could take human form. That meant they could be anywhere.

Robin twisted and turned in the bedsheets as her mind revisited the images, the horrifying spectacle of Elizabeth’s shadows tearing daemons apart while being just on the other side of the barrier Robin and Opal had worked hard to keep standing. How could she have not seen a thing?

How could any of them not seen anything until that courtroom?
